Intro

Crush, the paper derived from agro-industrial waste, gained considerable attention after its presentation at Luxepack Monaco 2012. Initially, the collection was limited to only seven colours, each representing a specific ingredient obtained from by-products of citrus, corn, coffee, hazelnuts, almonds, olives and kiwi. Over the years, research has been conducted in our R&D laboratory that has led to an expansion of the range. Currently, the collection has been nearly doubled, incorporating additional colours such as cherry, lavender, grape, cocoa and coconut. The question now arises: What will be the next ingredient that will join the range and make up to 15 percent of the paper’s composition?

Crush is now part of a range of environmentally friendly papers that meets the many needs and preferences of companies who wish to communicate on the most sustainable medium available: Paper from our Echosystem.

As part of Paper from our Echosystem collection, in regard to Crush it is guaranteed that:

• Made from eco-innovative raw materials, in this case from upcycling 15% agro-industrial by-products and also includes recycled paper fibre (40% pcw).
• The emissions are measured and have been totally offset.
• It is made with renewable energy sources; in the case of Crush this is self-produced.
• Proudly holds FSC™ certification, highlighting its commitment to being both recyclable and biodegradable.
• It is produced in accordance with a production process that is monitored and constantly improved.

Intro

Crush is one of Favini’s most popular ecological papers, due to both the fact that it recovers up to 15% of agro-industrial residues and also because it can be used for such a variety of applications: From packaging to editorial, from printed communication to tags.

Crush was introduced to the market in 2012 at the Luxe Pack Monaco trade fair. At that time, the paper contained seven versions corresponding to seven types of residues of coffee, hazelnut, almond, olive, kiwi, citrus and corn. In 2014, the Crush range expanded to include lavender and cherry, then grape (2016) was added, cocoa (2021) and finally in 2022 was coconut arrived.

Let’s start with the  most recent paper introduced: Crush Coconut. When compared to the other versions, Crush Coconut is the black paper version. This shade is achieved by an organic charcoal obtained by the process of burning the coconut shell.

The Italian wine industry is highly recognised worldwide, and wine production generates a significant amount of waste. Over the years, various sectors have recovered these residues, such as cosmetics and fashion. We at Favini use the pomace for the production of Crush Uva.

The red colour of the Crush Cherry, the small fruit available in Italy between spring and summer, stands out in the range. With this fruit a preserve is made, which from its production phase generates a waste, mainly cherry stones. From these residues comes Crush Cherry!

How is Cherry Crush born?

Lavender is a plant that is distinctive for its scent and colour. It is used in several sectors, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, where its essential oil is particularly sought after and produced. Favini uses the by-products generated by this process to make Crush Lavender, a paper unique in its colour!

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world, but how many of those who consume it are familiar with silverskin? This resource is crucial to the production of Crush Coffee: It is the husk that the coffee bean sheds when it is roasted.

Ctrus Crush is the paper that recovers the waste generated by the production of fruit juice. In fact, this process generates a lot of waste, it is called citrus mash, and it is used in many areas. You can see the residues of this material in our paper, have you discovered them too?

Citrus Crush residues

From the waste of nuts, such as hazelnuts and almonds, comes Crush papers. Two different coloured papers, and both have their residues clearly visible. Shells and skins are recovered to give a pleasant visual and tactile effect.

From dried fruit to Crush

We recover olive residues down to the last drop: To make Crush Olive, we recover the de-oiled pomace, a waste product generated by the oil extraction process. The de-oiled pomace is micronised and placed in the paper, the residue can be seen with the naked eye.

Fruit waste also included for the production of Crush is kiwi fruit waste. In particular, the waste used is the outer skin peel. Crush kiwi is a green paper ehhanced with agro-industrial residues.

Where does Crush Kiwi come from?

Crush Corn is the last of the papers to be presented. Available since the launch of Crush in  2012, it has the lightest shade in the entire range. This shade makes it possible to clearly see in the paper the residues generated during the shelling phase, and which comes from the maize cobs.

Intro

The new visual book of Crush, one of Favini’s most popular ecological papers, is now available. The well-known brand that is recognised for its use of agro-industrial residues, to replace up to 15% virgin cellulose. There is a wide range available, due to the variety of different recovered residues and colours used. This paper is suitable for a variety of applications, from packaging to publishing, printed communication to swing- tags.

The Sounds of Crush represents an evolution of the past visual book.

After ‘X-Ray’, the new aim is to amaze with unexpected images and different print techniques.

The concept phase

The visual book alternates between the onomatopoeic words illustrated by Rachel Joy Price and the photographs by Bruce Head.

Both contents express the concept of fruit explosion and are enhanced by different print techniques such as hot foil and matt screen printing.

The production phase: A long development of pre-press work and experimentation

Pre-press repro was crucial to the success of this visual, the colour curves and contours were managed in such a way as not to dampen contrast and brightness.

Indeed, characteristic to uncoated papers is that ink absorption is increased, images can consequently become duller, lose contrast and brightness if no attention is paid to the repro.

The inclusions in Crush become part of the image itself, making the depictions of fruit realistic.

A major challenge on tinted papers like Crush is to maintain the brilliance of the colours during printing. In some images and illustrations of the visual book, an initial pass of white was laid down before the addition of four-colour process.

In other cases, the white effect appears even when it is not actually present, thanks to an optical effect created by the contrast of the coloured images on the light paper.

The whole image printed across the double page spread onto different papers, is at first glance indistinguishable thanks to the prepress work. The paper itself is used to achieve certain colours in the image, without using white or other shades.

Colours and contrasts are maintained within the image, residue inclusions become part of the images.

Conclusions

Crush is not only a paper suitable for many different print techniques, as the visual book shows, but also for many applications. So, how will you use it?

Crush, particularly Crush Coffee, has been the protagonist of CirCo – Circular Coffee: a circular bioeconomy project born from the collaboration of various entities, Favini included.

Funded by Fondazione Cariplo and InnovHub-Stazioni Sperimentali per l’Industria (an Italian research, innovation and technology transfer centre), the project involves not only our paper mill but also Cnr, the Dipartimento di scienze e politiche ambientali dell’Università di Milano, the Accademia Eurac Research di Bolzano, and the multinational cosmetics company Intercos.

The main goal of the project is to enhance the by-product of coffee roasting, known as “silverskin” or the skin that envelops the coffee bean.

The range includes all of the 12 special ingredients: Cocoa, citrus fruits, grapes, corn, coffee, cherries, lavender, hazelnuts, almonds, olives, kiwis, and coconut! These ingredients constitute 15% of the paper, embracing the principles of circular economy and upcycling.

Crush also contains 40% post-consumer recycled cellulose, is FSC™ certified, and is recyclable. The paper is produced using renewable energy and is carbon-neutral.

Each A4 ream contains 50 sheets, of 250gsm weight, boasting good opacity and a slightly rough tactile surface.
