Paper from our Echosystem
From the 90s onwards, our R&D department has been dedicated to developing papers that respect the principles of the circular economy, combining the concepts of sustainability and innovation.
Over the years this process has been improved and refined, making it possible to create a very wide range of the most ecological papers. Our portfolio has a lot of further papers with eco credentials, but here we gathered the best in class under the umbrella brand “Paper from our Echosystem”.
Paper from our Echosystem contain 40% to 100% PCW (post-consumer waste) and / or pre-consumer fibre. Alternatively, and in the case of some ranges additionally, they contain eco-innovative raw materials, such as annual crops or up-cycled waste fibres. Explore all their features to find out more!
Alga Carta is the paper that lets the mind travel; evoking the salty sea thanks to its content of marine seaweed.
Since the 90’s it has inspired and provoked interest; Alga Carta is the paper created from the seaweed that plagued the fragile ecosystem of the Venice Lagoon. Even today, the same method is used for the creative reuse – upcycling – of overabundant seaweed from marine environments in other parts of the world.
Alga Carta respects all the principles of Paper from our Echosystem: it is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC™ certified and uses EKOenergy.
Furthermore, any unavoidable residual emissions have been offset.
Alternatively or in addition to recycled fibre content, we make our Paper from our Echosystem by upcycling materials such as textile or agro-industrial waste as well as alternative annual fibres such as bamboo. We can count on over 30 years of experience in the upcycling of fruit and nut waste, cotton and wool, as well as leather goods … and our research still continues! It doesn’t stop here: Explore all the other features.
Paper from our Echosystem collection is produced exclusively with 100% renewable energy. Alga Carta, Refit and Tree Free use certified self-produced hydroelectric power, EKOenergy. Shiro Echo, Remake and Crush are made with 100% ENEL Energia, produced with alternative energy sources such as hydropower, solar power, wind power and geothermal energy. Continue to explore some more!
Paper from our Echosystem has zero impact, thanks to the offsetting of any unavoidable CO2 emissions. In addition to adopting better structural processes in order to lower our environmental impact, we offset any residual emissions of this ecological collection by purchasing carbon credits and joining specific environmental projects. Citrus, cocoa, coconut grapes, cherries, lavender, corn, olives, coffee, kiwi, hazelnuts and almonds … all sound like the ingredients of a dessert but instead for us they are the ingredients for paper! Crush is the range made with by-products of agro-industrial processes that replace up to 15% of cellulose from trees. At the same time we give new life to these residues and we create exceptional papers with a pleasing tactile aspect. Crush respects all the principles of Paper from our Echosystem: it is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC™ certified, contains 40% PCW and uses renewable energy certified by Enel Energia. Furthermore, any unavoidable residual emissions have been offset.
Inspired by fashion industry, Remake contains 25% leather goods process residues. The leather residues are visible and are distributed randomly on the surface giving a natural and distinctive appearance. Remake will surprise you to the touch thanks to its soft and velvety feel. Remake respects all the principles of Paper from our Echosystem: it is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC™ certified, contains 40% PCW and and uses renewable energy certified by Enel Energia. Furthermore, any unavoidable residual emissions have been offset.
A wool sweater, a pair of jeans or a cool cotton t-shirt, this is what Refit brings to mind! The residues from textile production of wool and cotton, or in the case of denim, the material from worn out jeans that can’t be sold anymore, are upcycled to produce Refit. Refit Wool is so hairy that it feels like no other paper! Refit Cotton has that crisp laundry look and feel, whilst Refit Denim, has a timeless stonewashed colour and texture (just like your favourite pair of jeans!). Refit respects all the principles of Paper from our Echosystem: It is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC™ certified, contains over 50% pre and post-consumer waste, and now it is topped up with 25% wool, cotton or denim fibres and uses EKOenergy. Furthermore, any unavoidable residual emissions have been offset.
Eco-innovative raw materials
Paper from our Echosystem are made with eco-innovative raw materials:
- Recycled paper fibers from 40 to 100%
- Upcycled materials for creative reuse such as textile or agro-industrial waste
- Alternative fibre sources to tree pulp, such as bamboo
We select at least 40% post consumer waste or FSC™ Recycled certification for a 100% recycled solution. Alternative or in combination, we use innovative fibers from upcycling process of other industries: seaweeds, fruit and nuts, leather and textile. We explore also other alternatives to tree pulp, like the fast growing bamboo.
About Upcycling in Favini
Upcycling is a key element in Favini’s history. The first paper created from the upcycling principle was Alga Carta. This paper, patented by Favini in the ’90s uses the damaging algae of the Venice Lagoon. The next step in this direction was the launch, in 2012, of Crush, the innovative range of ecological papers made with residues from agro-industrial processing of corn, citrus, kiwi, olive, almond, hazelnut, coffee, lavender, cherry, cacao, grape, used to substitute up to 15% of tree cellulose. At the end of 2015 we launched Remake, a paper that includes 25% leather by-products and in 2019 we developed Refit, the innovative sustainable material that is inspired by the world of fashion. Refit includes over 50% pre and post-consumer recycled waste, topped up with 25% wool, cotton and, from 2024, denim fibres.
What’s next? Our laboratories are always working on new ecological paper!
Carbon neutral
We do our best for monitoring and reducing the CO2 emissions, and for the collection Paper from our Echosystem we do even more!
