Remake is the paper that utilises the principles of the circular economy, entering into industrial symbiosis with the leather goods sector. The waste of leather, suitably treated according to a process that we have developed, makes up ¼ of the composition of Remake.

A benefit for the environment, given that waste is transformed into a select raw material, Remake is additionally notable for its tactile aspect, that is created by the percentage of shavings and leather trimmings making this paper feel incredibly soft.

Remake is part of Paper from our Echosystem, which encompasses Favini’s most eco-friendly papers. These papers boast exceptional environmental credentials and possess distinctive textures with captivating colour palettes that are sure to impress.

The distinctive visual and tactile aspect of Remake is derived from its special ingredient.

This paper is actually made by replacing a portion of virgin cellulose with leather industry scraps.

These scraps include shavings from the tanning phase, resulting from the process of thinning the leather to achieve a uniform thickness across the surface, as well as offcuts from manufacturing processes, for instance cutting remnants that are not able to be used to produce other finished products.

These scraps are recovered and incorporated into the mixture, reducing the amount of virgin cellulose used.

This makes Remake paper sustainable and a leading player in industrial symbiosis practices.

Intro

Given the nature of our product “Remake,” the visual book could only draw inspiration from the concept of Upcycling. The Remake visual book is an editorial project designed to illustrate the term “creative reuse”; indeed, the Remake paper is produced according to this principle and serves as an industrial-scale example of it. Favini especially desired this booklet to inspire designers and tell the story behind the making of the Remake paper.

Remake is created with 25% of leather goods waste, saving cellulose as well as giving the paper a distinctive character that can be perceived through both touch and sight. And also not forgetting the embossed Remake version!

The Concept Phase: Theme and Connection with Remake

Creative reuse refers to the process of repurposing objects and materials to obtain a product of higher quality and value than the original.

We decided to use this concept to test the imagination of our illustrators.

With no limits imposed on their creativity, the results obtained are truly enterprising!

Chairs made from shopping trolleys, machines crafted from used shoes, a toaster created from an iron…

Upcycling knows no bounds!

The Production Phase: Unconventional Techniques and Fine Workmanship

Starting right from the cover, we can see that this editorial project is one of a kind. To the touch, Remake feels as soft as a leather jacket or a luxury handbag.

The visual book is a physical example of print performance.

In fact, this special paper lends itself to many print techniques, and the results are excellent.

Many subjects in the illustrations have been printed using CMYK: The paper adds value and is no longer just a support for the print.

Some details have been enhanced with a UV varnish. For instance, the wheels of the shoe-machine in Ian Bilby’s illustration, are so glossy, they almost appear to be raised.

Remake also works exceptionally well with screen printing, as seen in Harriet Russell’s illustration. The darker shade of the paper makes the colours shine, and the image seems to come out of the page.

Illustrator Peter Grundy, on the other hand, chose to focus on the Remake production process.

The result? A colourful and illustrative schematic of Remake’s upcycling process.

The leather goods waste, instead of being discarded, is revalued through Favini’s paper production cycle.
